Message from Dean James Fairfield-Sonn

"On the move!" That's the phrase that I think best describes the present state of the Barney School of Business. In the Fall, 2000 we received accreditation by the AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Thus we joined the ranks of just 551 business schools around the world that have received this evidence of high quality and a commitment to continuous improvement.

The degree programs of the Barney School of Business reflect our commitment to preparing men and women to be leaders and decision makers in all types of organizations. Our graduates fill leadership roles in major corporations, small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and government. Some start their own businesses, while others continue in law, medical, or other graduate programs. Underlying each of our degrees is the conviction that a well-developed sense of social responsiblity and an ethical approach are essential characteristics of leaders in all fields and endeavor.

Our undergraduate curriculum is a unique one built around a "career ready" focus. Not only do our students learn the relevant concepts and skills for leadership and decision-making positions but they also have special requirements and courses which focus on preparing them for entry into today's fast changing world. An internship and the completion of an applied project in the major are part of that "career ready" focus.

Our graduate classes are kept small to encourage active participation and establishment of close ties with other students, faculty members and staff. There is time for individual attention, which helps each student develop his or her special abilities. We teach both concepts and their application through a number of learning approaches, including case analysis and discussion, team projects, simulations, and individual research.

Our facilities have a new look with a refurbished entry hall, new carpeting, blinds, and classroom technology. Auerbach Hall features wired and wireless Internet connections. We also set up a newly refurbished reading room with daily newspapers and periodicals available for student, staff, and faculty use.

Continuing involvement with and service to the business community are part of our mission. We also have an active program called our Lunch and Learn Series which brings corporate executives to campus to speak. Enrichment workshops on topics such as negotiation and the use of various computer software packages are made available periodically to students and alumni at no charge. Our Leadership Development Center offers non-credit education and consulting services to organizations in our region.
